Amazon Says Run a Coupon. Should You? Let Your Unit Economics Decide

A coupon can be a useful growth test. The problem starts when “conversion may improve” is treated as the same thing as “the business should run it.”

This article is part of Nyansa Hub’s Amazon Seller AI Agent series, built for sellers who want useful AI without handing over unrestricted authority.

Sellers fund the discount. Current Amazon coupon programs can also carry program fees. Fulfillment cost may remain, referral fees can change with the actual sales price, advertising can still be needed to generate traffic, and product cost/inbound freight do not care that the unit sold on promotion.

Calculate contribution before and after

Start with selling price minus product cost, inbound freight/prep, referral fee, FBA/fulfillment fee, storage/other Amazon variable cost, advertising per unit and other variable costs.

Then calculate the post-coupon version using the discounted price and current coupon/promo fees. The difference is contribution lost per unit.

Now ask the harder question: how much must units increase to keep total contribution dollars flat?

If a SKU contributes $9 before the promotion and $4.50 afterward, you need roughly twice as many units just to create the same contribution dollars before considering secondary effects. A 20% lift would sound great in a conversion report and still leave the seller worse off on contribution.

Then add context a formula cannot decide

A promotion can still make sense strategically. Maybe you need rank, inventory is aging, repeat purchase is strong or the product is an acquisition SKU. But name the goal and cap the risk. Do not let “Amazon suggested it” become the strategy.

A seller-controlled AI agent is useful here because it can automatically add your costs and rules before a coupon recommendation reaches the approval stage.
