What you may actually be renting
Break the subscription into components: the model, the Amazon connector, storage/memory, business logic, UI, support and maintenance. Ask which of those creates proprietary value for you.
If the main value is “we connected an AI model to your Amazon data,” a one-time local implementation may reduce recurring connector/agent fees. You still own maintenance, and a hosted model can still have API usage charges. Local inference can eliminate that specific hosted-model usage cost, but hardware and maintenance are not literally free.
Reasons to buy
Buy when you need a polished interface immediately, a team supports it, the vendor maintains Amazon changes for you, the analytics are differentiated or your time is more valuable than building/maintaining the stack.
Reasons to build
Build when privacy, custom business rules, portability or authority control matter enough to justify setup. A seller-controlled local layer lets you decide what context leaves the machine, preserve your own audit trail, create your own approval rules and change models without handing the entire operating system to a new vendor.
The hybrid option is often best
Use a strong hosted model for reasoning while keeping Amazon credentials and deterministic execution local. Or keep the whole system local for maximum privacy. The point is not ideological purity. It is knowing which layer you are buying and which layer you want to own.
