What Should an AI Agent Actually Remember?

In 5 seconds

An AI agent should remember durable rules and project state. It should retrieve changing business facts. It should not casually remember secrets just because they were available once.

For you if: You are deciding what belongs in AI memory, project notes, retrieval, archives, or protected storage.

This article is part of Nyansa Hub’s Lean Context + Durable Intelligence series.

“Remember everything” sounds convenient until the agent starts carrying stale facts, sensitive data, compromised instructions, and old decisions into future work.

What is worth remembering

  • the current objective and project status;
  • approved business rules and durable constraints;
  • decisions that should survive a reset;
  • verification already completed;
  • known unresolved risks or blockers;
  • the next safe action;
  • where authoritative information lives.

What should usually be retrieved instead

  • current inventory;
  • current listing status;
  • today's prices;
  • current ad performance;
  • current order state;
  • current account-health signals;
  • any other fact that can materially change between sessions.

What should not become casual memory

Passwords, refresh tokens, API secrets, unnecessary customer PII, payment information, raw financial credentials, and unrelated private data should stay in appropriately protected systems.

Even if a model needs to use a capability, it usually does not need the raw secret. The connector can perform the allowed operation without making the credential part of model context.

Memory is a security boundary

OWASP now explicitly treats persistent memory and context poisoning as an agent-security concern. If untrusted information reaches a trusted memory layer, it may influence later sessions long after the original input is gone.

That means memory needs validation, isolation, size limits, review, and sensitive-data controls — not blind accumulation.

Preserve the conclusion when you can

If an agent analyzes a huge marketplace report and identifies one confirmed exception, future sessions may need the exception and the source reference, not the entire report copied into durable memory.

Preserve the decision. Retrieve the data when you need it again.

Put this into practice

Use the Lean AI Context Playbook if you want the operating method. Use the AI Context & State Management Toolkit when context, continuity, and durable state are recurring across projects or agents.

If your main question is repeated input and cost, use the AI Context Cost Calculator. If you want bounded reads and context budgets enforced technically, use the Token-Efficient Agent Context Coding Build Kit. Need the complete system? Use the Lean AI Operations Bundle.
