Why Your AI Seems to Get Worse the Longer You Work With It

In 5 seconds

If a long AI session starts repeating itself, confusing old and new instructions, or overlooking obvious details, the model did not necessarily become “dumber.” The working context may have become noisy.

For you if: You use ChatGPT, Claude, coding agents, or other AI for long seller-operations, research, coding, or planning sessions.

This article is part of Nyansa Hub’s Lean Context + Durable Intelligence series: keep working context lean, preserve business knowledge outside the conversation, and keep the AI provider replaceable.

Long sessions accumulate more than useful decisions. They also collect abandoned hypotheses, old tool results, duplicate instructions, superseded plans, large reports, and details from earlier phases that no longer matter.

That creates a context-quality problem. The AI has more material available, but the signal it needs for the current task can be surrounded by historical noise.

More context is not automatically better context

Modern agent systems are explicitly designed around this problem. Anthropic describes context pollution and information relevance as concerns even with larger context windows, and recommends techniques such as compaction and structured note-taking. OpenAI now provides compaction for long-running agent workflows so key state can be carried forward while older context is reduced.

The practical seller lesson is simpler: context quality beats context quantity.

Signs the session needs a reset

  • The AI asks a question you already answered.
  • An old instruction keeps resurfacing after you changed the rule.
  • The agent rereads the same large file or report several times.
  • It mixes one marketplace, account, project, client, or environment with another.
  • A raw export or debugging trace is still influencing work long after you extracted the useful conclusion.
  • You are keeping the conversation alive mainly because you are afraid to lose the history.

Do not solve this by dumping the whole transcript into the next chat

Before resetting, distill the session. Preserve completed work, durable decisions, current state, unresolved items, authoritative source locations, verification already completed, recovery information, and the next safe action.

Then start a clean session and reload only what the next objective needs.

This is the difference between conversation history and business state. The first can be huge. The second should be compact enough that another AI or a human can understand where the work stands.

An ecommerce example

Suppose you used AI to analyze hundreds of SKUs. The analysis session may contain the entire export, dozens of observations, several false leads, and multiple rounds of calculations. A later session working on one affected SKU does not need all of that.

It may only need: the affected SKU, the verified finding, the source report location, the decision already made, and the next action. Retrieve the current listing, inventory, or advertising facts when needed rather than carrying an old snapshot forever.

The better operating rule

Context is a workspace, not a warehouse. Let the conversation hold what the current task needs. Let durable files, logs, databases, and source systems hold what the business needs to keep.

Keep going

Use the free AI Context Reset Checklist when you need to clear a session without losing the work. Use the AI Continuity Checklist when the bigger question is whether your business can continue without one provider.

If the AI can also change live systems, context discipline is only one layer. Pair it with the AI Agent Safety Checklist and the Safe Ecommerce Automation Toolkit.

Put this into practice

Use the Lean AI Context Playbook if you want the operating method. Use the AI Context & State Management Toolkit when context, continuity, and durable state are recurring across projects or agents.

If your main question is repeated input and cost, use the AI Context Cost Calculator. If you want bounded reads and context budgets enforced technically, use the Token-Efficient Agent Context Coding Build Kit. Need the complete system? Use the Lean AI Operations Bundle.
